SHH Hospices - 25 years - Fundraising Event

Beep,Dig,Discover: Unearthing Speen's Hidden Past Thursday 14th May 2026 @ Speen Village Hall, Studridge Lane, Speen, HP27 0SA

7.30pm for 8.00pm start

Come along for a most enjoyable and informative evening to meet and discuss:

Two local metal detectorists Martin Radvan and Paul Trendall have been detecting since they were teenagers, but only got more serious when they retired. They are not part of any society or rallies etc, it's just the two of them and Martin's Border Terrier 'Poppy.' They only ever detect with the landowners permission and via Amanda De Thier have made contact with many people in Speen.

They have been detecting once a week and have been covering Farms and Houses in Speen for well over a year now. Each week they provide the owner with a report, there are around 30 produced so far for Speen. They also submit anything of historical significance to Aylesbury Museum for the Portable Antiquity Database.

Over the year they have investigated: Flowers Bottom Farm, Flowers Bottom Cottage, Darvills Hill Farm, Darvills Cottage, HighView House, The White House & Willots Farm and they are still working through them. As part of our reporting we've looked into local connections and have discovered various interesting areas including; a lace making site, a Military volunteers camp, the probable original route of the lane as well as countless domestic items of historical interest.

Ticket Price £7.50 per person

Feedback:

Just returned from the metal detectorists talk on Speen finds. It was absolutely fascinating, especially the stories of people that have come out after investigation. If the two guys ever come back I really recommend getting a ticket. Thanks Gráinne for organising. SH

I can second Sara's comments. Absolutely fascinating and so interesting. CD

Agree wholeheartedly Sara! Amazing stories of Speen. Great delivery and nice to have a glass of wine and a chat too! CN

Brilliant evening tonight at Village Hall. The metal detectorists were terific and made inanimate objects come alive. If they ever come back, we'd go again! GFS

Yes Gracie, they have become detectives as well. It was such a fascinating view of Speen's history. ML

What an unexpected pleasure last night. The detectorists were brilliant, a very interesting evening.

Above all, it got a lot of the villagers together socialising. I met one of my neighbours for the first time. CS

Really sad to have missed this, hopefully they can come back again soon as i'd love to hear all the stories and history of the items they've found. BS

May I echo all the positive feedback about the Detectorists evening. Humerous and informative in equal measure. A call out if you have some land around Speen or further afield or if you know of friends who have land for Martin,Paul and Poppy to come over and do some more detecting. Please DM me and I'll put you in touch. They may not find Saxon Gold, but it will perhaps get us another interesting evening in the not too distant future! AT

A really enjoyable and interesting evening and looking forward to having them back here again - thanks to the organisers. Wonderful to learn there was a Roman coin in our field! JT
