About Us - Speen Helping Hospices (SHH)

Speen Helping Hospices (SHH) is a small voluntary group run by a team of committed women from Speen and North Dean in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire to fundraise for four local hospices - Helen & Douglas House for Children - Rennie Grove and Peace Hospice Care - South Bucks Hospice at Butterfly House - Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

The hospices provide a range of palliative and end-of-life care services to people in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The hospices receive limited funds and are increasingly reliant on local support from communities like ours to continue to provide the specialist care of inpatient and day hospice services. We keep overheads down to an absolute minimum to ensure that the money raised goes directly to the charities. Since 2001, we have raised over £159,384 (as at the end of December 2023).

Timeline

The group - was founded in 2001 by Suzi Rose and called the Speen Supporters Group. Its objective was to raise funds for five local hospice charities. Helen & Douglas House, Oxford - The Friends of Florence Nightingale House, Stoke Mandeville - St Francis Hospice, Berkhamsted - Ian Rennie Hospice at Home, Tring and South Bucks Day Hospice, High Wycombe,

In 2013 it became The Speen Group and by this time was concentrating on fund raising for four local hospice charities. Helen & Douglas House for Children - Rennie Grove Hospice Care - South Bucks Hospice at Butterfly House - Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

In 2014 the name was changed again to become Speen Helping Hospices as this name described the purpose of the group and the full objective of raising money for local Hospices.See also: Fundraising before 2020 - Gallery

Gloria was a longstanding member of SHH, a marvellous networker who always knew the right person to contact, she was the "meet and greet" at all our fundraising events and we will miss her enthusiasm and positivity

June 2022

The annual Spring Lunch was back first time since 2019 on the 11th May over 58 people attended this at The Horse Trust in Speen. They were served a three course lunch and there was a presentation on the work of South Bucks Hospice at Butterfly House by David Haggart the Corporate Community Fundraising Manager.

Jane Marchant from Alchemille Garden Design was going to be selling plants at the event, unfortunately it was rather wet. On the following Saturday Jane and her daughter Lulu held a plant sale in Speen with profits going to SHH.£2,061 was raised by this event More detailed information here

On Sunday 12th June the third Jazz in The Park at Great Hampden Cricket Ground was held featuring the Martin Hart Quartet £2,434 was raised by this event. More detailed information here

Many thanks to all who came to the wine tasting evening in September. It was a very good evening. Simon Lloyd of Lloyd's Wines ran the event for the second year running and treated us to very generous glasses of wonderful wines. No telling tales out of school but, a number of cars were left in the car park that night! £777 raised for the hospices. More detailed information Here

May 2023

We had a busy end to 2022 with a range of fund raising events in Speen village and surrounding areas.

The Christmas Market in November was really successful and the takings were up on 2021. We raised £3,186. Thank you to all the wonderful stallholders and to you shoppers in Speen who came and supported this event, which is as much a social occasion as it is a retail opportunity!

The Pub Quiz Night on Friday 2nd December hosted by Al Bowyer and Jill Rogerson was a very lively evening. Al and Jill had compiled great questions and Jill kept the teams to time with great skill and diplomacy. The home-made cottage pie and apple crumble went down a treat and we raised £1,336.

Wrapping up the year we had the Christmas Hamper raffle that raised £827 and the carol singing £601 over two nights. Unfortunately the weather was very harsh that week and one night was cancelled as the ice was treacherous.

Thank you to Dorothy Ratcliffe who requested that donations in her husband's name Harold "Hal" who died in November were made to Speen Helping Hospices.

Each of the four hospices have now received £4,500. This can only be achieved with your support so thank you for that. We know there are many competing demands for your support and we are very grateful for the support you give us. Please continue to do so, many families in our locality alone have valued the kindness and care their loved ones have received from the hospices.

For our first fundraising event in 2023, we had the Valentine's Dinner Raffle. The meal included a cocktail, canapes, 3 course meal, chocolates, champagne and roses and was delivered to the two lucky couples Jill and Hugh Roberts and Gill and Richard Biffa. This raised £500, not as much as last year's figure of £840 so perhaps this event has run its course. We know some events lose their appeal and so are constantly looking for new ways to raise funds. If you can help us, please contact me, all ideas and support gratefully received!

On the 15th March 2023, the Charity Golf Day for SHH at Burnham Beeches Golf Club was held, This was the first golf event organised by Speen Helping Hospices. It was a Fourball Stableford Team Competition. When it was launched in early January it was sold out within seven days. We received a fantastic amount of sponsorship for prizes and holes and the event raised £5,500.

March 2024

2023 was a challenging year for Speen Helping Hospices probably reflecting financial constraints as high interest rates and inflation hit people's discretionary spend. Selling tickets for events, that were traditionally very popular, was challenging and had it not been for the Golf Challenge at the beginning of 2023 our donations to the four hospices would have been considerably less. However, by drawing from our first event of 2024, the Quiz Night, we will now donate a total, of £18,000 that is £4,500 to each hospice leaving a small amount in balance to cover costs.

Many thanks to all of you who bought tickets, danced quizzed, shopped, sang and ate at the events of 2023. This group initiative has been going for many years and we would hope to continue this with your support.

The Christmas Market raised £2,746 and the Christmas Hamper raffle £500. The carol singing in Speen raised £605 over two evenings, we had a fantastic group of carollers, by far the best ever, and they were warmly received at many doorsteps. Perfume sales including Tom Ford and Estee Lauder donated by the Brands Owners was over £3,000.

We are very grateful to the Thursday Studridge Social team Kate Vale, Kate Slade and Jo Thompson who raised £764 for SHH. They put in a huge amount of work making, baking and serving home-made soup, sourdough and a range of delicious cakes and scones in the Speen Village Hall.

At the end of 2023 we had raised £19,059 in a very difficult year.
